| Black bears were very important to the Southeastern Indians. They would have a big bear hunt and when one was killed, they would place the bear's head on a tall pole in the center of the village and celebrate. They celebrated the successful hunt because the bear rewarded the tribe with meat for food, fat for cooking, salves and insect repellents, skins and furs for blankets and clothing, and bones and claws for tools and adornment. Every part of this coveted animal was used for their survival. The bear's head was left on the pole until only a skeleton remained. This symbol was a reminder of the hunter's bravery and sacrifice and gave him esteem among his clan and tribe. |
